Stay Cool This Summer: Free Fans for Seniors in Charlotte

The summer heat can pose serious dangers, especially for seniors in Charlotte. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), extreme heat claims about 1,220 lives each year across the United States. The escalating temperatures, consistently hovering above the historical average, are becoming a pressing concern, especially in recent years when July's average temperature has reached a sweltering 81.6°F.

To combat the oppressive heat, the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department is stepping up to support the local community by providing free fans to seniors and adults with disabilities at nine designated community centers throughout the area. This initiative is not just a kind gesture; it’s a vital step to ensure the safety and well-being of those particularly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

Who Can Participate in This Program?

This admirable initiative targets individuals aged 60 and older, along with those between 18 and 59 who qualify for disability income. Registration is required, and participants are asked to provide proof of age and residency in Mecklenburg County at the time of fan pickup. Each individual is eligible for one fan, ensuring that the program is equitable while supplies last.

How to Register for a Free Fan

Registration is simple: it opens on June 18, 2025, at 9 a.m. Participants can enroll either online or by calling their local recreation or senior center. It’s important to note that individuals must complete their registration prior to picking up the fans on June 25 and cannot walk in without prior registration.
