According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), extreme heat claims about 1,220 lives each year across the United States. To combat the oppressive heat, the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department is stepping up to support the local community by providing free fans to seniors and adults with disabilities at nine designated community centers throughout the area. Who Can Participate in This Program?
This admirable initiative targets individuals aged 60 and older, along with those between 18 and 59 who qualify for disability income. Registration is required, and participants are asked to provide proof of age and residency in Mecklenburg County at the time of fan pickup. Each individual is eligible for one fan, ensuring that the program is equitable while supplies last.

Registration is simple: it opens on June 18, 2025, at 9 a.m. Participants can enroll either online or by calling their local recreation or senior center. It’s important to note that individuals must complete their registration prior to picking up the fans on June 25 and cannot walk in without prior registration.
